11.18.08 EMITT RHODES

Hawthorne, CA, native Emitt Rhodes made his first mark in the music world in 1967 as the leader of the baroque pop band the Merry-Go-Round. The band achieved some marginal success with the Rhodes-penned "Live" and "You're a Very Lovely Woman," recording one album of Magical Mystery Tour-inspired pop. When the band broke up in 1969, Rhodes set up a home studio in his parents' garage and began his solo career, engineering and playing all instruments himself. The strength of his initial demos, now showing a strong Paul McCartney influence, helped him get signed to ABC/Dunhill. His critically acclaimed, self-titled debut managed to break into the Top 40 in 1971, but pressure from his record company forced him to rush-release a follow-up, Mirror, the same year. Mirror was predictably a lesser effort, barely charting. By the time of the third album, 1973's Farewell to Paradise, Rhodes was running into legal problems with ABC, since he was unable to fulfill his contract, which demanded he deliver a new album every six months. Disillusioned, he retired from the performing side of the business, working instead as an engineer and studio operator for Elektra/Asylum. Though he never released an album since Farewell to Paradise, he continued to write and demo new songs.

09.09.08: Guest Dj Stepehen Holman....Tribute to NURSE WITH WOUND

"A loose experimental project formed in 1978 by Steven Stapleton, Nurse with Wound explored abstract music -- influenced by Krautrock, freewheeling jazz improvisation, and Throbbing Gristle but including a heavy debt to surrealists Dali and Lautréamont -- with an overpowering release schedule of limited-edition albums and EPs. Stapleton worked with an ever-changing list of collaborators during the early years of Nurse with Wound, though Current 93's David Tibet has been the only frequent recording companion during the 1980s and '90s."

Additionally, Mr. Stapleton has continued his relentless output to the present day. He has continued to explore and expand the outer reaches of experimental music while always showing his somewhat dark sense of humor.His contemporary collaborators include (as always) David Tibet, Colin Potter, Andrew Liles and the legendary German collective Faust.

Our (returning) guest DJ is Stephen Holman! In addition to his impressive resume of directing, writing and performing (please visit www.wholesomeproductsfilms.com), Stephen is also die-hard Nurse With Wound collector and scholar. This show will undoubtedly include many rarities from the enormous NWW recorded output as well as brand new material (that is actually still in print!)

A brief background on our guest Dj:

Nelson Bragg played in several bands from 1979-1999 including positions as a pit drummer for over 20 stage musicals. (Emerson College theater in Boston, New London Barn Playhouse, New London, NH among others) His bands include the horn driven/post-punk dance band, Big Noise, (1981-1987, Woodstock, New York) and Farmhouse (1989-1992), a harmony based folk-rock group based out of Northampton, Mass. Nelson moved to Los Angeles in 1999.

In 2000, Bragg finally found a successful path joining several L.A. pop bands that include The Now People, The Quarter After and Cloud Eleven. In 2001, he joined "Stew" for his "Naked Dutch Painter" CD and played subsequent shows and residencies promoting it. That CD was "Entertainment Weekly's "Album of the Year" for 2002. He also played with The Negro Problem, Stew's former band and alter ego. In 2003, Nelson got the call to join Brian Wilson's band as percussionist/vocalist to perform Wilson's legendary unreleased album "Smile". That now legendary February 2004 premiere in London and tour, was followed by a formal recording of "Smile", released in September 2004, winning a Grammy award, ironically in the "Best instrumental" category ("Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" featuring Bragg on virtually all of the whistles and sound effects at the top of the piece.) In 2005, the Smile 2 DVD set was released featuring a full-length documentary of Brian Wilson's incredible Smile story and the making of it both in 1966-67 and newly in 2004. That documentary aired on Showtime in October 2004 and was directed by Beach Boys and pop authority David Leaf. A live concert performance of Smile is featured on the second disc.

In 2003, prior to his position with The Brian Wilson Band, Bragg started recording a solo album which was completed and released on Side B Music in 2007. "Day Into Night" was reviewed very favorably and continues to garner college and Internet airplay worldwide. It boasts the talents of Nick Walusko, fellow Brian Wilson band-mate and Wondermint, Mike Randle, Guitarist with Baby Lemonade and longtime member of Arthur Lee and Love, Morley Bartnoff, keyboardist with Burning Sensations and currently with Dramarama, Rob Campanella, organist/guitarist with The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Quarter After, Probyn Gregory, fellow Brian Wilson band-mate and Wondermint, Severo Jornacion, Bassist with The Smithereens and Debbie Shair, keyboardist with Heart. It also features The Stockholm String Ensemble on seven of its twelve tracks. Nelson performed all acoustic guitars, vocals, drums and percussion among other instruments on the record. The record is influenced by CSNY, George Harrison, The Byrds, The dB's, Canada's The Grapes Of Wrath, and was produced by well known L.A. pop/garage producer Steve Refling.

Nelson has been involved with many bands including drumming live and recording cd's with the aforementioned Now People, the Quarter After, Cloud Eleven and with The Mello Cads, Keven Kane (The Grapes Of Wrath), Andrew Sandoval and most notably The Mockers. Bragg has garnered 3 tours of Spain with The Mockers in 2002, 2005 and 2007. A documentary about The Mockers and the American dream is in the works with a 2008 release in mind.

08.12.08: LENE LOVICH

One of the more offbeat and memorable figures in new wave, Lene Lovich certainly drew much of her widely varied approach from her unconventional early experiences. Born of a Yugoslavian father and British mother, she spent much of her childhood in Detroit, MI. At age 13, she moved to Hull, England, with her mother. She ran away to London shortly thereafter, where she worked several odd jobs ranging from bingo caller to go-go dancer to street busker. Around this time, she developed an interest in art and theater, enrolling at the Central School of Art. She took up the saxophone and, after a brief stint in a soul-funk band (with future collaborator Les Chappell), Lovich wrote a string of songs for French disco star Cerrone. In 1978, Stiff Records signed her after hearing her first recording, a remake of "I Think We're Alone Now." She quickly became one of Stiff's brightest stars, headlining package tours and earning several U.K. hits over the next three years with the unforgettable "Lucky Number," "Say When," "Bird Song," and "New Toy." After an eight-year absence, she returned in 1990 with "March".

Since Lene Lovich burst onto the scene with her 1979 hit single "Lucky Number," ushering in the New Wave era, her life has been defined by an unyielding commitment to the arts and activism. She starred in the French television film Rock, costarred (with Nina Hagen and Herman Brood) in the motion picture Cha-Cha, and co-wrote and played the lead in the London stage play Mata Hari. She co-wrote the score to the short film Alpha Girls, and also wrote the libretto for the opera The Collector, and recorded Peter Hammill and Judge Smith's opera Fall of the House of Usher. She recorded and toured in support of the fundraising single "Don't Kill The Animals" with German star Nina Hagen. The Stereo Society, the on-line label founded in 1999 by celebrated producer Mike Thorne (Wire, Bronski Beat, John Cale) released Lene's greatly anticipated album in 2005: "Shadows and Dust"

Lene Lovich's impact on pop music can hardly be understated. The influence of her arty, flamboyant new wave persona, assertive, banshee-howl-inflected vocals, and idiosyncratic songwriting style can be seen clearly in countless female artists, from peers like Siouxsie Sioux and Grace Jones, to those who have followed in her footsteps: Bjork, PJ Harvey, Gwen Stefani, and Karen O. In her absence, it is impossible to conceive of the modern landscape of alternative female pop artists. Lene has carved out a unique niche in the world, always while doggedly pursuing her own muse, her own passions.

08.05.08: PULP

Most bands hit the big time immediately and fade away, or they build a dedicated following and slowly climb their way to the top. Pulp didn't follow either route. For the first 12 years of their existence, Pulp languished in near total obscurity, releasing a handful of albums and singles in the '80s to barely any attention. At the turn of the decade, the group began to gain an audience, sparking a remarkable turn of events that made the band one of the most popular British groups of the '90s. By the time Pulp became famous, the band had gone through numerous different incarnations and changes in style, covering nearly every indie rock touchstone from post-punk to dance. Pulp's signature sound is a fusion of David Bowie and Roxy Music's glam rock, disco, new wave, acid house, Europop, and British indie rock. The group's cheap synthesizers and sweeping melodies reflect the lyrical obsessions of lead vocalist Jarvis Cocker, who alternates between sex and sharp, funny portraits of working class misfits. Out of second-hand pop, Pulp fashioned a distinctive, stylish sound that made camp into something grand and glamorous that retained a palpable sense of gritty reality. (- Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

07.22.08: GUEST Director: JEFF FEUERZEIG's tribute to SPACEMEN 3

He will be spinning a 2 hour mix of all things SPACEMEN 3 plus highlights from their equally stunning post-S3 projects such as Spiritualized, Spectrum and E.A.R. (Experimental Audio Research).

Jeff Feuerzeig directed, wrote and created from scratch The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2006), which forever changed the way documentaries are made through the rare combination of high-class production values and the dismissal of a rule book. Released theatrically by Sony Picture Classics, 'Devil' has earned ecstatic reviews all over the world, astonishing, enchanting, and devastating audiences. For this work, Feuerzeig won the Best Director prize for a documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 2005. His earlier films include the feature documentary Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King (1994) and PBS’ Jon Hendricks: The Freddie Sessions (1990). Feuerzeig has just completed the screenplay for God Bless Tiny Tim, a feature biopic about the legendary singer who Tiptoe’d Through the Tulips in 1968.

SPACEMEN 3 - "Three chords good, two chords better, one chord best” just barely chips away at the secret of the iceberg of greatness that is Spacemen 3. Like a few dead artists worth fawning over – their fire burned white hot and they died young leaving behind a beautiful corpse - 5 perfect albums, Sound Of Confusion, The Perfect Prescription, Playing With Fire, The Dreamweapon, and Recurring - all killer and no filler – only to live on and continue the Lords work in Spectrum and Spiritualized. Peter Kember aka "Sonic Boom" and Jason Pierce aka "Jason Pierce" did this while playing sitting down - which should be a lesson to all. Hugely influential, often copied and never equalled - their sound was minimal and maximal at the same time. Their willingness to cover and share their influences: The Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, the Stooges, the MC5, early Captain Beefheart, out-there jazz legend Sun Ra, the Silver Apples, garage punk of the 1960s such asthe 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, and the Electric Prunes; the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and other surf bands; ’80s rockabilly groups the Cramps, the Gun Club, Tav Falco; blues and gospel acts like Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, the Staple Singers and John Lee Hooker; and the production techniques of Joe Meek, and Brian Wilson proves that there is no accounting for good taste.

07.15.08: ELLIOTT SMITH

Elliott Smith has been a patron saint of the indie scene since his days helming Portland heroes Heatmiser. As a solo artist, Smith led a revolution of home four-trackers, from Beck to Cat Power, out of the bedroom and into the studio, where Smith's fondness for Beatlesque melody led to some of the most beautifully orchestrated pop of the last decade. Folk-punk singer/songwriter Elliott Smith rose from indie obscurity to mainstream success in 1997 on the strength of "Miss Misery," his Academy Award-nominated song from the film Good Will Hunting. A native of Portland, OR, Smith began writing and recording his first songs at age 14, later becoming a fixture of the city's thriving music scene; as a member of the band Heatmiser, he debuted in 1993 with the LP Dead Air, issuing his first solo effort Roman Candle on the tiny Cavity Search label a year later. For his 1995 self-titled album, Smith signed with the noted Kill Rock Stars label; Either/Or followed in 1997, around the same time that filmmaker and longtime fan Gus Van Sant requested permission to use the singer's music in his upcoming Good Will Hunting. Smith also composed a handful of new songs for the soundtrack, among them "Miss Misery," and when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its Oscar nominations the following February, the track was a surprise entry in the Best Original Song category. Although he did not win, Smith performed the song live at the televised Oscar broadcast, appearing on-stage alongside superstars Trisha Yearwood and eventual award-winner Celine Dion in one of the most notably surreal musical moments in recent memory. Smith's DreamWorks label debut, XO, followed later in 1998. Two years later he delivered Figure 8, which indulged in lush arrangements and orchestrations more so than any of his previous solo efforts. For the next two years, Smith labored over what was to be his next album, From a Basement on a Hill. He would not live to see its completion, however — to the shock of friends and fans alike, Smith's body was found on October 21, 2003. To date, the coroner has been unable to determine the cause of death, and the Los Angeles Police Department's investigation remains open. From a Basement on a Hill was released two days shy of the first anniversary of his death to critical acclaim. In 2007, Kill Rock Stars issued a two-disc set of some of the late singer's unreleased work, all of which had been recorded between 1994 and 1997. Entitled New Moon, the 24-track collection contained three songs that had been previously released on hard-to-find compilations or soundtracks, an early version of "Miss Misery," and a live favorite of his, a cover of Big Star's "Thirteen." 07.01.08: THE PASTELS

Although virtually unknown outside of indie rock circles, the Pastels were one of the most inspirational and enduring groups of their era, spearheading a movement towards a renewed sense of wistful musical primitivism and willful naivete known variously as "shambling" and "anorak pop; " in addition, their influence helped bring international notice to a resurgent Scottish musical community, with frontman Stephen Pastel's legendary 53rd and 3rd label helping to launch the careers of bands including the Jesus & Mary Chain, Shop Assistants, BMX Bandits, the Vaselines and the Soup Dragons.

Tonight we will be playing 2 hours of the Pastels. Also records from bands that we're on Stephen Pastels 80's label "53rd & 3rd" (Vaselines, Househunters, Shop Assistants, BMX Bandits, etc..) and bands from the Pastels own current label "Geographic" (Future Pilot AKA, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, etc..).

06.24.08: THE BLUES

"Blues is about tradition and personal expression. At its core, the blues has remained the same since its inception. Most blues feature simple, usually three-chord, progressions and have simple structures that are open to endless improvisations, both lyrical and musical. The blues grew out of African spirituals and worksongs. In the late 1800s, southern African-Americans passed the songs down orally, and they collided with American folk and country from the Appalachians. New hybrids appeared by each region, but all of the recorded blues from the early 1900s are distinguished by simple, rural acoustic guitars and pianos. After World War II, the blues began to fragment, with some musicians holding on to acoustic traditions and others taking it to jazzier territory. However, most bluesmen followed Muddy Waters' lead and played the blues on electric instruments. From that point on, the blues continued to develop in new directions -- particularly on electricinstruments -- or it has been preserved as an acoustic tradition." (allmusic.com)

Tonight's show will not attempt to be conclusive more of a personal faves overview including blues artists from the 1930s-70s including such legends as John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and their legions of followers such as Peter Green, Alexis Korner, Jeff Beck and John Mayall.

06.17.08: Guest JASON ANCHONDO

Jason Anchondo may be best know for playing drums in his former band the Warlocks. He also did some time playing tambourine for the Brian Jonestown Massacre when Joel Gion left. Jason currently plays in the psychedelic spaghetti western band Spindrift and Portland's Rebel Drones (featuring Matt Hollywood of the BJM and the Outcrowd, and Peter Holstrom of the Dandy Warhols).

Tonight Jason will be spinning some records and chatting with us about this years second annual Clean Air Clear Stars festival he helps curate.

Clean Air Clear Stars is an annual 3 day music festival held at Pappy and Harriets in Pioneertown California , with the exception of one held in Austin, Tx during the SXSW festival . 100% of the profits raised from these all-volunteer events will benefit affiliated environmental charities to continue to make important changes for global harmony. Past artists have included A Place to Bury Strangers, Viet Minh (members of Black Angels), Entrance, Assemblehead in Sunburst Sound, Greg Ashley (Gris Gris), the Tyde, Spindrift, the Moon Upstairs, and many more. "Composer, bandleader and inventor Raymond Scott was among the unheralded pioneers of contemporary experimental music, a figure whose genius and influence have seeped almost subliminally into the mass cultural consciousness. As a visionary whose name is largely unknown but whose music is immediately recognizable, Scott's was a career stuffed with contradictions: though his early work anticipated the breathless invention of bebop, his obsession with perfectionism and memorization was the very antithesis of jazz's improvisational ethos; though his best-known compositions remain at large thanks to their endless recycling as soundtracks for cartoons, he never once wrote a note expressly for animated use; and though his later experiments with electronic music pioneered the ambient aesthetic, the ambient concept itself was not introduced until a decade after the release of his original recordings." -Jason Ankeny

Tonight we pay tribute to one of the unsung greats. We will pull from Raymond Scott's early jazz quintet and big band repertoire as well as his electronic scores for '60s commercials and short films plus some (as of yet) not re-released gems.

Tonight, we bring you over 30 years worth of Mr. Hitchcock's musical legacy. From his early excursions with the Soft Boys to his '80s mainstay, the Egyptians, on through the '90s and '00s with his solo and current work with his new group, the Venus 3, it will all be addressed with our usual array of hits and rarities .......

05.13.08: MOMUS

Momus was the alias of Nick Currie, a Scottish-born singer, songwriter, and provocateur whose music careened from acoustic ballads to electro-pop to acid house and back again. Born in 1960, Currie spent time living in Greece and Canada before returning to Scotland to attend university; in 1981, he dropped out of school to form the Happy Family, a band additionally comprised of three prior members of Josef K. After signing to the 4AD label, the group recorded only one LP, 1982's The Man on the Street, before disbanding.

After returning to (and graduating from) university, Currie moved to London in 1984. After cutting a deal with el Records, he released Circus Maximus in 1986; the first offering released under the Momus name (chosen in honor of a Greek god banished from Mount Olympus for daring to criticize the wisdom of Zeus), the album spotlighted Currie's rich baritone and fascination with themes of psycho-sexuality and cultural crises, recurring motifs throughout his extensive catalog of work.

A move to Alan McGee's Creation label preceded the release of 1987's melancholy The Poison Boyfriend, followed by 1988's homoerotic Tender Pervert. Even more frankly sexual was the next year's Don't Stop the Night, a collection exploring taboo topics including incest and necrophilia. With 1991's Hippopotamomus — dedicated to the late Serge Gainsbourg — Momus came under attack; the album, dubbed "a record about sex for children," drew fire from feminists as well as a lawsuit from Michelin UK, which objected to a lyrical reference to their mascot, the Michelin Man. (The suit was subsequently settled out of court, and all remaining copies of the album were destroyed.)

Undeterred, Momus returned in 1992 with a pair of new records, The Ultraconformist and the ambient-styled Voyager, inspired by the work of Yukio Mishima. After writing the 1993 album Shyness for Japanese performer nOrikO (who adopted her stage name Poison Girlfriend in tribute to Momus) and releasing Timelord (his final work for Creation), Currie made tabloid headlines for his 1994 marriage to 17-year-old Shazna Nessa, the daughter of a Bangladesh-born restauranteur. Currie and Nessa first met when she was just 14; after her parents learned of the relationship, she was sent back to Bangladesh to enter into an arranged marriage, but escaped to return to London to marry Currie, forcing the couple to go underground for fear that Nessa's family would kidnap her.

Currie, now living in exile in Paris, subsequently signed to the Cherry Red label and resurfaced in 1995 with The Philosophy of Momus, an eclectic set veering from reggae to blues to techno which featured "The Sadness of Things," an indie hit recorded with Ken Morioka of the Japanese pop band Soft Ballet. Slender Sherbet, a collection of re-recordings of material from the Tender Pervert era, followed later in the year as Momus suddenly found success in Japan writing and producing for the Lolita-pop songstress Kahimi Karie, with whom he notched a string of five consecutive Top Five hits.

20 Vodka Jellies, a collection of demos performed by Momus and intended for Karie, appeared in 1996, and was the first of his records issued in the U.S. In addition to writing and producing material for Nessa's band Milky and the CD-ROM magazine Blender, Currie rounded out the year by writing, producing and programming the CD-ROM collection This Must Stop. Of all the punk-inspired bands that came out of Boston in the early '80s, none were better than Mission of Burma.Arty without being too pretentious, capable of writing gripping songs and playing with ferocious intensity, guitarist Roger Miller, bassist Clint Conley, drummer Peter Prescott, and tape head Martin Swope galvanized the city's alternative rock scene, and despite a too-short existence, set a standard for excellence that has rarely been equalled — a standard the band upheld when they unexpectedly reunited in 2002.

Burma's music is vintage early-'80s post-punk: jittery rhythms, odd shifts in time, declamatory vocals, an aural assault similarly employed by bands such as Gang of Four, Mekons, and Pere Ubu — Burma's peers as well as their influences. Also, conspicuously present in the mix was the proto-punk of the Stooges and Velvet Underground (with just a dash of Led Zeppelin and Roxy Music), bands that inspired Burma's darker songwriting impulses and tendencies toward longish, repetitive jams capable of holes into your skull. What Burma added was a sonic texture through the use of extreme volume. Roger Miller's guitar enveloped the band in thick, distorted cascading chords, erupting into squealing solos and (intentional) squalls of feedback. With Prescott and Conley furiously bashing in support, the band's sound was extremely physical (ask anyone who saw them live) to the point of leaving the audience feeling slightly bruised, battered, but extremely happy.(-John Dougan,All Music)

Few women in the history of rock & roll have stirred as much controversy as Yoko Ono. Ono's own work as an artist and musician didn't mitigate the public's enmity toward her; to the average man on the street, her avant-garde conceptual art seemed bizarre and ridiculous, and her highly experimental rock & roll (which often spotlighted her primal, caterwauling vocals) was simply too abrasive to tolerate. That view wasn't necessarily universal (or true), and in fact the merits of her work are still hotly debated. Regardless of individual opinion, Ono has left a lasting legacy; she was an undeniably seminal figure in the history of performance art, and elements of her music prefigured the arty sides of punk and new wave (whether she was a direct influence is still debated, although the B-52's did admit to drawing from her early records). Moreover, between Lennon's assassination and the myriad drubbings she's taken in the press and the court of public opinion, an alternate portrait of Ono as a strong, uncompromising survivor has emerged in more recent years. 02.12.08: MINIMAL MAN (aka PATRICK MILLER)

It's too easily the case that so many artists of that came out of the late seventies punk uproar -- and those of the other parallel scenes already coalescing at that time -- aren't as readily remembered or appreciated because they couldn't be specifically pigeonholed. Such was the case with Californian Patrick Miller aka Minimal Man, whose recorded work through the eighties spanned everything from near white noise to calm ambient reflections, scattered among a variety of labels. Born in Glendale in 1952, Miller, originally a student in art and design, moved to San Francisco in the late seventies, starting to explore both film and music more thoroughly as a result. He soon found friends and collaborators via the Subterranean label, notably including members of Tuxedomoon, and under the Minimal Man guise -- what Miller described once as a character who had ‘everything against him…rather than fixing a problem the correct way, he would make up his own delusions to get by' -- he began regularly performing what one critic called ‘antimusic' -- aggressive keyboards, shouted vocals and the use of tapes almost made him a one-person equivalent to Throbbing Gristle, as captured on the debut live single "He Who Falls"/"She Was a Visitor" in 1980.

By the time of the first full album, The Shroud Of, the band was more or less a trio, with Miller -- who specifically preferred and encouraged a rotating rather than permanent membership with his band -- joined by flute/sax/bass player Andrew Baumer and drummer Lliam Hart, along with a slew of guests. 1983 brought a second self-released single, "Two Little Skeletons"/"Tired Death," while in the following year was a slightly more conventional release in the form of sophomore album Safari, with Miller and Baumer joined by Blaze Smith on guitar and John Serell on drums. Shortly after this Miller followed the example of Tuxedomoon and relocated to Europe, where the remaining Minimal Man albums were recorded and released. The fairly brutal Sex With God was the first in 1985 on the Dossier label, with Miller joined this time by Blaise Smith on various instruments and Kristin Oppenheim on various instruments; an excerpted and perhaps remixed EP reduction of the album, simply called Minimal Man, appeared later that year on Fundamental. Miller then moved to the Play It Again Sam label in Brussels, who released Slave Lullabyes the following year, featuring Tuxedomoon members Peter Principle and Luc Van Lieshout among the many performers. The Mock Honeymoon EP appeared in 1987, also featuring Principle and Van Lieshout, while 1988 brought the final two Minimal Man albums.

Hunger Is All She Has Ever Known continued the Principle/Van Lieshout partnership (as well as that with keyboardist/drummer Ludo Camberlin, also a veteran since Slave Lullabyes), while Pure, released on the LD label in Belgium, was an interesting reinterpretation of early recordings by Miller from his late seventies San Francisco days, with Van Lieshout and guitarist Gerry Vergult providing new parts. Miller moved back to the United States in the early nineties, battling a variety of personal demons, particularly drug abuse, and setting aside music to create more art, finally settling down in Southern California again doing set dresser work in Hollywood. After contracting hepatitis C, Miller passed on in December 2003, survived by family and friends. In 2004, the LTM label, via its Boutique sub-imprint, reissued The Shroud Of on CD for the first, perhaps signaling a further overall reissue of Miller's often unique, striking work. 01.22.08: THE JAZZ BUTCHER

The Jazz Butcher was the vehicle of prolific singer/songwriter Pat Fish, an archetypal British eccentric whose sharp observational wit and melodic gifts navigated the group through over a decade of constant line-up shifts, stylistic mutations and even a series of name changes which found the band performing variously -- and apparently randomly -- under such titles as the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy and the Jazz Butcher & His Sikkorskis From Hell.

Fish first concocted his Butcher persona in 1982, quickly enlisting his Oxford mates to join him in a band of the same name; even from the outset, the group's roster changed seemingly on a daily basis, although Fish found an early mainstay in guitarist Max Eider. The Jazz Butcher's eclectic 1982 debut A Bath in Bacon -- including early skewed pop gems such as "Love Zombie" and "Sex Engine Thing" -- was essentially a Fish solo record, but by 1984's folky A Scandal in Bohemia the roster had stabilized to include ex-Bauhaus bassist David J. Following The Gift of Music, a 1984 compilation of single sides, the Jazz Butcher resurfaced the following year with Sex and Travel, a marvelously odd set ranging in sound from punk ("Red Pets") to cabaret ("Holiday").

After David J left the band to join Love and Rockets, the remaining quartet -- Fish, Eider, bassist Felix Ray and drummer Mr. O.P. Jones -- rechristened themselves the Jazz Butcher and His Sikkorskis from Hell.
Followed the next year by an EP, Hard. Leaving the rhythm section behind, Fish and Eider then recorded 1986's Conspiracy EP, credited to the "Jazz Butcher vs. Max Eider" and foreshadowing the subsequent shift to the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy aegis for Distressed Gentlefolk. Eider soon exited to mount a solo career, leaving Fish to team with guitarist Kizzy O'Callaghan for 1988's Fishcoteque, their first release for the Creation label.

By the time of 1989's Big Planet Scarey Planet, the line-up also included the superb bassist Laurence O'Keefe, saxophonist Alex Green and drummer Paul Mulreany; 1990's Cult of the Basement was recorded with the same roster, but the usual disruptions soon left Fish essentially to his own devices for 1991's Condition Blue and 1993's Waiting for the Love Bus. Upon reuniting with David J, who produced 1995's low-key Illuminate, Fish decided to lay the Jazz Butcher name to rest, and performed a farewell performance in London at the end of the year. He subsequently signed on to play drums with the Stranger Tractors, but in 1999 reunited with Eider for a Jazz Butcher Conspiracy tour of the U.S. The live Glorious and Idiotic appeared the following year and Rotten Soul was issued in fall 2000.

01.08.08: ALAN MCGEE / DICK GREEN (BIFF BANG POW, REVOLVING PAINT DREAM, LAUGHING APPLE)

Many know Alan McGee for his involvement with setting the music industry on its head along with his partner Dick Green (now founder of Wichita Records) with their label Creation Records. What many are not as familiar with are their contributions to music with the bands they were in.

Tonight we will be focusing on 2 hours of Alan and Dick's contribution to music with a tribute to "BIFF BANG POW"..."The REVOLVING PAINT DREAM"...and "The LAUGHING APPLE".

Glaswegian Alan McGee had previously been in the band Laughing Apple (along with Andrew Innes later of the Revolving Paint Dream, Primal Scream, Church of Raism, etc.) , who released 3 singles in 1981/82. After moving to London, McGee formed a new band, Biff Bang Pow!, taking their name from a song by one of his favourite bands, The Creation. The first release on Creation records, "73 in 83"" by The Legend! came with a flexi-disc featuring a split with The Pastels "I Wonder Why?" and Laughing Apple's "Wouldn't You", a song that would later appear on the first Biff Bang Pow! album.

The initial Biff Bang Pow! line-up was McGee on guitar and vocals, with Dick Green on guitar, Joe Foster (Television Personalities/Slaughter Joe) on bass, and Ken Popple on drums, later adding others like Ed Ball (Television Personalities/The Times).

Biff Bang Pow! — the music-making endeavor of Creation Records founder Alan McGee — was for a long time a touchstone for the influential label's definition and development, albeit one that never assumed the limelight or achieved any major hits. (Having named his label for the great '60s aggro-art-mod group, it was probably inevitable that the Glaswegian's band, which never used the Creation for specific musical cues, would take its moniker from one of that band's songs.) From the initial recordings, rife with brisk, neo-psychedelic garage pop, to the spare, acoustic laments at the end, Biff Bang Pow! ambled along, releasing a string of well-conceived and well-executed singles and albums that still sound fresh. McGee's position as head of Creation Records perhaps meant that his band were never given a fair hearing by the music press, although they always maintained a loyal fanbase.

The Revolving Paint Dream was not only the most mysterious band on Creation Records' original roster back in 1984, but also one of the most inventive.
After a memorable psychedelia-tinged single, Flowers In The Sky/In The Afternoon, in February, the band disappeared for three years before a strange collection of what seemed like out-takes, OFF TO HEAVEN, reached the shelves in June 1987.
'60s-influenced psych-pop sat alongside weird, distorted soundscapes to create an album that lacked any overall identity but was stacked full with ideas.
It transpired that the band comprised Primal Scream's second guitarist Andrew Innes, Nico-like vocalist Christine Wanless (both present on several Biff Bang Pow! recordings) and Luke Hayes, with some involvement from label organizers Alan McGee and Richard Green , among other members from Creation Records' bands. Although Alan and Dicks contribution to music through their label Creation Records have certainly not gone unrecognized...unfortunately their own personal musical contributions have not been as recognized. 12.11.07: THE MONOCHROME SET

The Monochrome Set had its origins in 1979 post-punk
England yet unlike many bands of that era (Joy
Division, PiL, Gang of Four, etc.), they sounded much
cleaner and pop-oriented. Their lyrical approach
however contrasted elegantly against their upbeat,
melodic music. That's not to say the musical backdrop
was merely wallpaper. Their songs were uniquely
constructed and executed and their sardonic lyrics
crystallized them as one of the more subversive pop
groups influencing bands such as the Smiths and Pulp.

Tonight, we'll spin 2 hours of the Monochrome Set as well as solo and side projects by Bid, Lester Square, The Invisible, Scarlet's Well , the Would-Be-Goods, etc...

11.06.07: PROGRESSIVE ROCK

Ahhhh yes, the hipsters will turn their noses up, the
punks will run for the hills and those left behind
will be subjected to 2 hours of PROGRESSIVE ROCK!

As with all of our 'genre tributes', what is prog and
what is not prog will be left up to us.........Prog
Rock is a fairly maligned category due to its long
history of taking rock to 'bloated excesses' and
having the rock element obscured by mathematically
inclined, show off-y musicians. So be it. However, at
its best, Prog Rock (with a little help of its more
accepted cousin, Psychedelic Rock) pushed past the
guitar/bass/drums line-up doing the
verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/ chorus out formula
that had ruled the preceding 5 years or so.
Adventurous song arrangements as well as the
incorporation of non-traditional 'rock' instruments
are now commonplace in various forms of popular music

That being said, tonight we'll get down with the
sounds of such prog legends as King Crimson, Van Der
Graaf Generator and Genesis as well as lesser known
bands such as Sensation's Fix, Slapp Happy and Spring.

10.16.07: THE TELEVISION PERSONALITIES

Britain's Television Personalities enjoyed one of the new wave era's longest, most erratic, and most far-reaching careers. Over the course of a musical evolution that led them from wide-eyed shambling pop to the outer reaches of psychedelia and back, they directly influenced virtually every major pop uprising of the period, with artists as diverse as feedback virtuosos the Jesus and Mary Chain, twee pop titans the Pastels, and lo-fi kingpins Pavement readily acknowledging the Television Personalities' inspiration.

The Television Personalities were the brainchild of singer/songwriter Dan Treacy, who grew so inspired by the nascent punk movement that he recorded a 1977 single, "14th Floor," with his friends in the group O Level. The BBC's John Peel became a vocal supporter of the group, which was soon dubbed the Television Personalities. With releases on Rough Trade, Illuminated, and Fire they spawned a new breed of psychedelia throughout the late 70's and all throughtout the 80's.

In 1981 Dan Tracey and Ed Ball launched their own label Whaam!(named after the Roy Litchenstein painting). Both Dan and Ed were leading figures in the contemporary psychedelic revival, and the influence was evident. By 1983 a legal dispute with a pressing plant prohibited Dan from putting out the record on his own Whaam! label so Dan set up the Dreamworld label as the successor to Whaam!, initially to reissue the early TVP albums. He soon began releasing recordings by other bands, including the Mighty Lemon Drops and Hangman's Beautiful Daughter.

By the mid-late 90's Dan Treacy appeared to retire from actively recording and touring. Apart from occasional meetings with record labels for reissues and compilation albums, he kept a low profile. Rumours of depression, heroin addiction and homelessness surfaced from time to time until finally in 2004 Treacy wrote a letter to Iain Baker, an old friend and DJ at London's XFM. In it he disclosed that he was incarcerated on a prison boat in Dorset. Following his release in June of 2004, Treacy set about resurrecting the TVPs, playing some gigs and posting a hilarious web journal. Finally, in March of 2006 a new album, My Dark Places, was released on the influential Domino label.

Service, Le Mat, Marine Girls, and the list goes on and on.

Timeless'. From the proto-punk of the Electric Eels,
Rocket from the Tombs and the Mirrors to the art
damage of Pere Ubu, (early) Devo, Pressler-Morgan and
Dr. Bloodmoney to the street punk of the Pagans, the
Rubber City Rebels and the Dead Boys plus Peter
Laughner, the Numbers Band, Human Switchboard, Chi-Pig
and a bunch of other Ohio goodies, you will hear it
all squashed into to two hours tonight!

10.02.07: SLY & THE FAMILY STONE

Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established
himself as one of the most influential and
idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation.
Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in
terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his
critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a
longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of
his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning
of his solo career in the late '60s until the late
'90s, he never stopped writing, recording, and
performing. Just as importantly, Young continually
explored new musical territory, from rockabilly and
the blues to electronic music. But these stylistic
exercises only gained depth when compared to his two
primary styles: gentle folk and country-rock, and
crushingly loud electric guitar rock, which he
frequently recorded with the Californian garage band

08.21.07: DR. JOHN

Although he didn't become widely known until the 1970s, Dr. John had been active in the music industry since the late '50s, when the teenager was still known as Mac Rebennack. A formidable boogie and blues pianist with a lovable growl of a voice, his most enduring achievements have fused New Orleans R&B, rock, and Mardi Gras craziness to come up with his own brand of "voodoo" music.

In the late '50s, Rebennack gained prominence in the New Orleans R&B scene as a session keyboardist and guitarist, contributing to records by Professor Longhair, Frankie Ford, and Joe Tex. He also did some overlooked singles of his own, and by the 1960s had expanded into production and arranging. After a gun accident damaged his hand in the early '60s, he gave up the guitar to concentrate ..boards exclusively. Skirting trouble with the law and drugs, he left the increasingly unwelcome environs of New Orleans in the mid-'60s for Los Angeles, where he found session work with the help of fellow New Orleans expatriate Harold Battiste. Rebennack renamed himself Dr. John, the Night Tripper when he recorded his first album, Gris-Gris.

He began building an underground following with both his music and his eccentric stage presence, which found him conducting ceremonial-type events in full Mardi Gras costume. Dr. John was nothing if not eclectic, and his next few albums were granted mixed critical receptions because of their unevenness and occasional excess. They certainly had their share of admirable moments, though, and Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger helped out on The Sun, Moon & Herbs in 1971. The following year's Gumbo, produced by Jerry Wexler, proved Dr. John was a master of traditional New Orleans R&B styles, in the mold of one of his heroes, Professor Longhair. In 1973, he got his sole big hit, "In the Right Place," which was produced by Allen Toussaint, with backing by the Meters. In the same year, he also recorded with Mike Bloomfield and John Hammond, Jr., for the Triumvirate album.

Stephen Holman.....in his own words:

"I'm an animation director, performance artist,
painter and writer, born in Hastings, England but now
dividing my time between San Francisco and Los
Angeles. I work together with my wife Josephine Huang
creating, writing, designing and directing TV shows
via our TV production company (W)Holesome Products
Inc. Over the last ten years, shows we've made have
included "Life with Loopy" for Nickelodeon, "Phantom
Investigators" for Kids!WB and "Dudley & Nestor Do
Nothing" for the Disney Channel.
In the 1980s and '90s I ran the Splattervillian
performance art troupes Theater Carnivale, Torture
Chorus and Poo Poo Bomb and performed in art spaces,
clubs and rock venues around the US, Europe and Japan.
These days I perform mainly solo shows and continue to
produce and exhibit my performance-related paintings".

For two hours, Stephen will be spinning music that has
both influenced him throughout the years and music
from his various cohorts and performances.

British punk was partly inspired by the back-to-basics rock & roll of the pub rock movement and the anything-goes theatrics of glam rock, but the main catalysts were early New York punks like the Ramones and the New York Dolls.   U.S. Hardcore Punk of the 1980s was very much a regional phenomenon. As bands and their local scenes evolved past Hardcore's 1982 zenith, different regions moved into different post-Hardcore territories. Husker Du, The Replacements and Soul Asylum were three bands representing Minneapolis. Where many other bands from the midwest and the east coast were exploring thrash and metal, these bands were incorporating a more melodic element to their already established raw and noisy roots. Truthfully, each band had their own distinct sound(s) and each was constantly evolving from one album to the next, paving the way for '90s alternative luminaries such as the Pixies and Nirvana. Tonight, we'll be spinning cuts from these three highly influencial bands.

  As we've previously declared, the UK Punk Explosion of the late '70s opened the floodgates for many subgenres. 'Post-Punk' is yet another somewhat arbitrary term that covers a lot of different bands (generally from 1978-1982) with a lot of stylistic variation. The common thread with most of the Post-Punk bands is an adventurous (sometimes downright abstract) take on the guitar-bass-keyboard-drum formula. Tonight we'll be spinning 2 hours of U.K. Post-Punk including songs from This Heat, The Raincoats, Magazine, Public Image Ltd, Joy Division and many more.

Since the original wave of mod bands in the '60s only included a few of bands -- (the Small Faces, the Who, etc.), there were actually more mod groups in the revival than there were in the '60s. 04.17.07: BRINSLEY SCHWARZ

Brinsley Schwarz formed in the fall of 1969 and featured ex Kippington Lodge members Nick Lowe and Brinsley Schwarz, as well as Bob Andrews, Billy Rankin, and Ian Gomm who would later go on and form such bands as The Rumor (Graham Parker), Rockpile, and solo ventures.

  Almost single handedly and unconsciously starting the North London and South East Essex "Pub Rock" movement along with Dr. Feelgood, Ducks Deluxe and Chilli Willi & the Red Hot Peppers, Brinsley Schwarz stood out from the rest of those bands. Their sound went along more with groups and artists like the Flying Burrito Brothers, Van Morrison, and the Band. With a grassroots down-home country/folk rock feel, they were closer to their american contemporaries. Perhaps the reason why wide-range success didn't seem to happen for them. They called it a day in the spirng of 1975. Members would later go on to achieve success on their own. Nick Lowe only a few years later would finally make his mark as a pop star and producer of such Brinsley Schwarz inspired artists as Elvis Costello. Bob, Billy, and Brinsley would go on to form the Rumor and back up Graham Parker as well as the Rumor's own records on Stiff. Ian Gomm became a solo artist and later teamed up with Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds to form Rockpile.

  One of the most underappreciated and unrecognized bands of the 1970's with songs that just ooozed hits. Tonight on WE'RE GONNA BE TIMELESS we are going to pay our respects to this unbelievable band. Tune in, listen and learn.

  In the late 80's and early 90's rock music was either ruled by glossy mainstream rock or underground "ironic" indie rock. Royal Trux smashed that into a million pieces with their brew of rock n' roll. With a fresh take on classic rock and a penchant for experimentation you could never pin them to any particular genre. Jennifer Herrema was 1/2 of the mighty Royal Trux. After the demise of Royal Trux in 2001, Jennifer formed RTX. Applying the same snarl and grit she had with her previous band but taking it one step further. Once again Jennifer has managed to take her brew of rock and smash any preconceived notions you might have had. In 2004, RTX came out with their debut album, "Transmaniacon". Now with their sophomore release "Western Xterminator" out on dragcity, RTX is ready to unleash itself to the world again! "It's almost impossible to overstate the impact and importance of Fela Anikulapo (Ransome) Kuti (or just Fela as he's more commonly known) to the global musical village: producer, arranger, musician, political radical, outlaw. He was all that, as well as showman par excellence, inventor of Afro-beat, an unredeemable sexist, and a moody megalomaniac. His death on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS deeply affected musicians and fans internationally, as a musical and sociopolitical voice on a par with Bob Marley was silenced. A press release from the United Democratic Front of Nigeria on the occasion of Fela's death noted: "Those who knew you well were insistent that you could never compromise with the evil you had fought all your life. Even though made weak by time and fate, you remained strong in will and never abandoned your goal of a free, democratic, socialist Africa." This is as succinct a summation of Fela's political agenda as one is likely to find."

  The 2 Tone Records label was started in 1979. Just as the last embers of first wave UK Punk had gone out, 2 Tone emerged with a fully formed look and sound. The sound was a retooled update on Jamaican Ska fueled with the energy of punk. The look was that of bands with mixed racial lineups promoting unity in the face of various forms of social unrest in late '70s England. Unlike many D.I.Y. indie labels of the punk era, 2 Tone Records generated both critical AND public praise which resulted in resulted in many top 10 hits in the UK. The first seven singles from the label sold at least a quarter-million copies each within the first year! The artists that are associated with the 2 Tone label (the Specials, The Beat, The Selecter, The Bodysnatchers, Madness) have all continued to create great music to the present day in various incarnations.

Sarah Records was founded in 1987 by Clare Wadd and Matt Haynes in a small basement flat in Bristol in the same way many upstart indie labels have since Sarah's inception. Sarah Records follows along the same indie pop tradition as labels like (early) Creation records started out. Except Sarah stayed true to it's sound. The label mainly focused on Twee and C86 bands of that time but branced off into Folk-pop, Psych-pop, Jangle-pop, Rainy Day Balladry, and Bubblegum chirp. The label ended in 1995. Matt Haynes (1/2 of Sarah) then started Shinkansen Records which somewhat picked up where Sarah left off. Though Sarah's impact far surpassed it's post label offerings. Influencing tons of labels like K Records, Marina Records, Bus Stop, Summershine, Kindercore, Little Teddy Recordings, Motorway, Vinyl Japan, etc...  Tonight we will play an array of Sarah bands like Sea Urchins, The Field Mice, Golden Dawn, Blueboy, Boyracer, East River Pipe, St. Christopher, The Orchids, etc.  If your not familiar with this great label, then listen and learn.

Punk Rock was not given its name until around 1976, yet most of the defining characteristics can be traced in the preceding 10 (or so) years. Proto-Punk is not a cohesive movement or style. It's really just a label that seems to fit many different bands (in many different ways): The Stooges, The Modern Lovers, Roxy Music, Neu!, The Fugs, The Velvet Underground, etc.....All somewhat out of step with their surroundings and all true originals.

Representing over 25 countries of indigenous music, this is a world music survey. The rare recordings we will be playing were made as an anthropological record of cultural folkloric music that, by and large, are ceremonial or ritual in nature. These ethnographic representations of the diversity of manipulated sound demonstrate the vast dimension of tribal and even modernized culture. An interesting element to much of these recordings is that the music functions as an integral part of the culture rather than a peripheral accoutrement.

  The post-bossa nova Brazilian pop music of the late '60s and early '70s, in many ways, followed the trends of the UK and US. Protest songs, psychedelic experimentation, a hippy return to strumming and shouting, heavy rock-glam and so on....

  Alas, the military dictatorship which ruled Brazil from the mid-60s until the mid-80s made it much harder for these (r)evolutions to take place. Nonetheless, Brazilian artists such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Tom Ze and Os Mutantes fiercely made their amazing contributions and remain hugely popular and successful worldwide.

One of the sweetest falsetto voices in music... Curtis Mayfield got his start in the late 50's forming The Impressions along with Jerry Butler. Bulter split to go solo shortly after, leaving Curtis to lead the band. With 14 top hits and a stack of unbelievable records under his belt, Curtis Mayfield decided to go solo in the 70's while still writing for the Impressions.

  Curtis Mayfield left behind some of the most powerfully conscious music of our time. In a time of great adversity, were some would rather write only love songs or turn a blind eye, Curtis sang about what he saw happening in the streets. I guess this would be the ultimate love song. Songs about human rights, social change, self-love, unity, and self -awarness. A humanitarian through the power of music and a beautiful songwriter whose influenced, with his unique guitar playing, the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to name a few.

  After a freak accident with a lighting rafter falling on him in 1990 at a concert in Brooklyn, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down, his health slowly deteriorated. On December 26, 1999, the world lost one of the most beautiful human beings and souls, but left behind a huge cataloge of awareness that still applies to today.

  So people get ready because for 2 hours we are going to take you on a journey through the music of CURTIS MAYFIELD.

Big Star was the greatest band that never was.  Led by equally masterful singer-songwriters, Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, Memphis-based Big Star combined melodic elements of the Beatles and harmonic elements of the Byrds with the drive and power of the early Who and made a sound all their own.  Their three albums recorded between 1972-1975 were received well critically but poorly marketed and, as a result, all but overlooked by the music buying public.  Over the last 30 years, Big Star has achieved major cult status (how's that for an oxymoron?) and has influenced everyone from Cheap Trick to R.E.M. to Teenage Fanclub to nearly every skinny-tied power popper of the late '70s-early '80s.  Tonight on WE'RE GONNE BE TIMELESS, we will dedicate our show to the music of Big Star and their pre and post-Big Star projects such as The Box Tops, Rock City and the solo work of Chilton and Bell.

We the Congregation of the Almighty Church of Rock and Roll have lost another guiding light.   On August 9th, Arthur Lee passed away after an intense battle with acute myeloid leukemia. His contributions to the evolution of Rock via his TIMELESS band Love are immeasurable. Love blended elements of folk, blues, garage rock, flamenco and jazz to create sounds which would inspire his contemporaries (such as Jimi Hendrix and our other recently departed hero Syd Barrett) as well as future generations of artists.

 Tonight on WE'RE GONNA BE TIMELESS, we will be spinning Love and other concurrent bands (Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, etc.) and some of the bands Love has inspired (The Clientele, Belle and Sebastian, and so many more.)

07.17.06: Tribute SYD BARRETT (RIP)

On July 7, 2006 Roger Keith ('Syd') Barrett died at the age of 60. Equally inspired by contemporaries John Lennon and Bob Dylan, Barrett was also influenced by the literature of Lewis Carroll and James Joyce.

  The first Pink Floyd album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is cited by many a rock fan/critic/snob as being the ultimate statement in British Psychedelic Rock. Syd Barrett's brief yet highly influential career was cut short by the onset of schizophrenia fueled by the pressures of sustaining a rapidly up and coming band and a much documented steady diet of LSD. After two solo albums, Barrett retired from songwriting and eventually moved back to his mother's house where he had spent the last 30 years or so trying to lead a normal, quiet life.  This week on WE'RE GONNA BE TIMELESS, we will pay our respects to Mr. Barrett and those whom he has influenced including: Robyn Hitchcock, Julian Cope, the Television Personalities, the Legendary Pink Dots and Kevin Ayers.

With punk rock being marketed and packaged like twinkies and ding-dongs, underground Metal (and we're not talking silly Pop-Metal) has kept itself underground and grass roots. With non-stop touring and underground networking and mail-order, this genre has carved its own path free of musical confinement. Creating images lyrically and musically that defy the norm and create stories and folklore that can be at times both frightening, as much as it can be just plain ridiculous. Either way, buy a neckbrace for Tuesday because tonight (Monday) you will be BANGING YOUR HEADS to the most slaying and crushing sounds!

Twenty years ago, from suburban Detroit, came what's known as TECHNO. Before there were laptops, before there was pro-tools, there was a small core group of youthful visionaries who were equally inspired by the sounds of Kraftwerk, Parliament-Funkadelic, Silver Apples, Herbie Hancock and Giorgio Moroder. Armed with only synthesizers and drum machines, a new sound was created and kickstarted a worldwide musical phenomena, which has grown and mutated into a zillion sub-genres of electronic experimentation.
